Recently it’s been brought to my attention that 6’3” is not ‘that’ tall (it’s only ‘tall’). Still, watching Jeremy Jay play on Saturday, all 6’3” of him, I understood why he appears that tall. There’s a gangly unease to his presence; he’s mostly arms and legs, with a flop of pale hair and a crinkly smile. Something about him inspires the word ‘dapper’ (perhaps the heeled loafers), and yet his physical gravitas is underplayed by the fact that he seems really nice (perhaps because of the oversized Corona that befriended his hand all night)

Jay performed selections from A Place Where We Could Go, his latest release (April 2008), Airwalker (2007 EP), and Alpharhythm, a shiny curiosity that’s as booty shaking as a mellow 60s throwback can be. “Heavenly Creatures,” one of my favorite tracks from A Place, didn’t differ much from the album version in execution; it was just better. Truthfully, all the songs were better live (a statement proved true by my concert companion who said “he’s better live” and “I like this”).

It’s always special when a musician improves himself on stage. Jay plus band had a richer sound and a more inviting presence. While A Place envisions a sort of sparse alternaverse, where Lynch meets Howard Hawks and every moment is like opening the door to Oz (you know, trippy but logical), the show felt comfortably austere. Jay’s style still fluctuated between vintage noir and downtown hipster, but his attitude was mostly blasé. He rocked out a bit, funked it up a smidge, and even tackled the underappreciated Blondie ballad “Shayla” without ruining it forever. Moreover, as if to befit the Entry’s seedy punk club-meets-rapist’s basement ambience, his pretty croon sounded sort of sexy, in a dirty, non-cardigan-wearing way (as opposed to his clean-cut, cardigan-wearing self). By the end of the show, JJ’s good boy image was ruffled some, thanks to that sexy voice and also thanks to large bottles of Corona. (Thanks, large bottles of Corona.)

I am so disappointed with you for having lied to the public about having an affair while your wife battled cancer. This is concerning on so many levels.

#1 You lied to the American public about this while vying for a Presidential seat on the democratic ticket. We have been down this road before and it never bodes well with most folks. How can you expect people to put their trust in you when you can look at them and lie?

#2 Your actions lead me to wonder if we can trust any politicians or do they all sleep around and lie about it if they think they can get away with it? This has happened so much lately that I don't know if integrity and politics can ever mesh. Yes, I feel bitter.

#3 This hurts our party and our country. Please gentlemen, stop thinking with that thing between your legs!

#4 You ~~are~~ were capable of doing such good in this country, especially for those living in poverty. I am sure you can agree that this "liason" was not worth the damage it has caused.

#5 Most important of all- How could you cheat on your wife during her battle with cancer? That is lower than low.

Grrr. John Edwards, if you were here right now in front of me, I would slap your little pretty boy face.

Runzas on the Run...from the police?

Michael read about a new restaurant near my house called Runzas on the Run. We were very excited to have some familiar eating. We were even more excited that it was local and expected the Runzas would be much tastier and fresher than the fast food version.

They were.

But sadly, after the article ran in the local newspaper, Runza in Nebraska found out about this lovely little restaurant and said they couldn't use the word Runza because it was federally copyrighted.

Lawyers.

This lovely lady named Carol, who made the most delicious runzas I'd ever heard in my life, had to change the name of her restaurant. Even though runza is a type of food, and the type of food she specializes in, she is legally not allowed to use it.

She was very sweet, the runzas were deliciously fresh, and the prices were awesome.

But now, instead of Runzas on the Run, her little shop is called simply, On the Run.

We came up with a few suggestions for a new name and added them to the pickle jar with other people's suggestions.

I think eating at this runza place will have to be a tradition. She was wonderful. And so was the food.

Brown Palace Boettcher Banquet

The program I'm in is sponsored by the Boettcher Foundation. Besides our program, the Foundation also supports a statewide scholarship. They choose 40 scholars from across the state and these high school seniors are granted full rides to any school in Colorado, be it public, private, whatever. It's wonderful.

As another of the Foundation's projects, we were invited to attend a banquet to recognize the scholars and teachers who inspired them. Each student chose one scholar to invite and gave a short little speech about why this teacher changed their life. It was wonderful inspiration for those of us just getting into teaching.

It also made me smile, noticing that some high school seniors were nervous and some looked like they were comfortable making up their speech on the spot. It was good for me to get back into the high school mindset and remember what level of maturity and scholarship these kids might be displaying.

Another cool thing was taking a tour before the banquet. Apparently the DNC was held in Denver 100 years ago, and the Brown Palace Hotel was the head quarters. Our professor Karen asked if Senator Obama would be staying at the Brown Hotel, but our tour guide was elusive.

The food was beautiful and delicious, but the level of sophistication made me nervous. At one point one of the servers apparently did not think our classmate and friend Rachel was fully prepared for the meal. We were still listening to the speakers but were starting to eat at the same time. The server took Rachel's napkin off the table and placed it on her lap. I was amazed that the decorum of the banquet was apparently more important than caring about Rachel's feelings. Why didn't the server simply ask Rachel to use her napkin? In rebellion, I was a total tourist and took tons of dorky photos, to take the edge off the snobbiness of our surroundings.

Saturday we went looking for a hike. Not knowing what we were doing at all. We drove and drove looking for a trail and happened upon another instead. Which was great, because we got to walk to the top of a mountain.

Edwards Admits Sexual Affair; Lied as Presidential Candidate

John Edwards repeatedly lied during his Presidential campaign about an extramarital affair with a novice filmmaker, the former Senator admitted to ABC News today.

In an interview for broadcast tonight on Nightline, Edwards told ABC News correspondent Bob Woodruff he did have an affair with 44-year old Rielle Hunter, but said that he did not love her.

Edwards also denied he was the father of Hunter's baby girl, Frances Quinn, although the one-time Democratic Presidential candidate said he has not taken a paternity test.

Edwards said he knew he was not the father based on timing of the baby's birth on February 27, 2008. He said his affair ended too soon for him to have been the father.

A former campaign aide, Andrew Young, has said he was the father of the child.

Edwards said the affair began during the campaign after she was hired. Hunter traveled with Edwards around the country and to Africa.

Edwards said his wife, Elizabeth, and others in his family became aware of the affair in 2006.
