Our Mayor, the one who wants to make a Chinatown on the south side of the city, continues to ignore our cratered streets while he aims to get homeless people off the sidewalks. Because, as he puts it, "panhandlers are a sham." Yeah, right, it's like some Ponzi scheme and they are all secretly living in the suburbs. How much longer will this guy be Mayor?

You know, I have mixed feelings about this. On the one hand, given my line of work, I know that most panhandlers aren't doing themselves much good and are usually using the money they earn to feed addictions. I think it probably would be a good idea to put containers downtown for people to put money into rather than giving it to panhandlers.

But at the same time, I'm alarmed that the mayor wants to purge people from downtown who don't look like he thinks they should look.

I guess my feeling is maybe the city should do some things that reduce the incentive to panhandle downtown while not arresting people for activities that neither harm nor threaten anyone.

And Ballard? He's a one-termer, so...43 months left?
