David Byrne Converts Building Into Giant Instrument

As an architect of the legendary Talking Heads, David Byrne once offered up an album called More Songs About Buildings and Food. These days, he's tripping into architecture and turning a building into food for the ears. I think I just stopped making sense.

Let's start over. Starting May 31, visitors to New York's Battery Maritime Building will be able to take part in Byrne's interactive music installation called simply "Playing the Building." Like its self-explanatory title implies, the Battery will be fitted with devices that will allow visitors to make music off of the piping, pillars and more. It's an interesting way to view the structures we take for granted in everyday life. According to Byrne, it could be the future of music itself.

"I'd like to say that in a small way it turns consumers into creative producers," Byrne explains on his official site, "but that might be a bit too much to claim. However, even if one doesn't play the thing, it points toward a less mediated kind of cultural experience. It might be an experience in which one begins to reexamine one's surroundings and to realize that culture -- of which sound and music are parts -- doesn't always have to be produced by professionals and packaged in a consumable form.

"I'm not suggesting people abandon musical instruments and start playing their cars and apartments," he adds, "but I do think the reign of music as a commodity made only by professionals might be winding down. The imminent demise of the large record companies as gatekeepers of the world's popular music is a good thing, for the most part."

Interesting! No word on whether using the lavatory will resut in uninteded crescendos. Heh.

The first time I watched this video, it called to mind the scenes from "Michael Clayton" of the corporate lawyer (played so perfectly by Tilda Swinton) practicing her facial expressions and vocal intonations before a press conference. I wondered if anyone else had made a similar connection between Hillary and that character from "Michael Clayton," so through a series of Google searches, I discovered something quite troubling indeed: Hillary's close ties to Monsanto. And the group that calls itself "Rural Americans for Hillary?" = Monsanto lobbyists! Holy shit! Why would any true rural Americans support a presidential candidate who keeps such unseemly bedfellows?

I guess the media has been too focused on "Bittergate" and Rev. Wright to discuss something that is actually germane to a candidate's integrity.

We moved to Indianapolis from Miami, FL in the middle of winter. I was in first grade and, on my first day of school, it was cold and snowing. It was a difficult age to be uprooted. I was quite nervous about starting a new school in a new city in the middle of a school year. And the stress of it all was still with me during the bus ride home. But it all melted away as we turned into my neighborhood and there was my mom, standing at the bus stop with a sled. A sled! I got off the bus and she pulled me all the way home.

Happy Mothers' Day to all the moms out there! You are loved more than you know!

But, our Governor doesn't live there. His actual residence is in a northern suburb, in one of these:

Gated Community

That way, he doesn't have to worry about bumping into the rabble when he takes his trash out to the curb.

Seems a little out of touch, doesn't it? To eschew the lovely Governor's Residence, located on the near north side of Indianapolis (the hub of state government), in favor of a gated community in an affluent suburb.

See? I'm Really Just a Regular Guy!

And, if he has his way, the entire state of Indiana will eventually be owned by some foreign conglomerate, and the United States as we know it will cease to exist. The end.

After a weekend spent playing "Where's Barack?" and after the surge of elation I felt upon hearing of his Indianapolis Rally, I missed it. Can you believe that? I'm so lame! I realized that if the gates opened at 7:30 and with the line extending down to Louisville ... the odds were not good that I would make it home before 10:00. And that's pretty late for me to be out on a week night. Plus, I felt the magnetic pull of my sweet little girl, and I would have been bummed to arrive home after her bedtime. I did visit the scene of the rally briefly and that was pretty cool, but I guess it's official: I am a fuddy-duddy.
