Today is G's Birthday!! Though, with our ailing kitty, he's not feeling too celebratory. Maria and I made him a cake before I left for work this morning. It ended up looking unintentionally patriotic. I was using one of those red decorative frosting tubes and, as I was going about my decorating, an excited bit of red frosting burst forth onto the cake and left me with few options. I turned it into a star, a big red star on a field of white surrounded by Maria's favorite ingredient: sprinkles! (I could probably get her to eat spinach if it had sprinkles on it!)
To go with the cake, I bought some Edy's Limited Edition Banana Split ice cream. Yum!
And, in honor of his special day, here is a poem by one of G' s favorite writers.
Happy Birthday, G! I love you.
The Peace of Wild Things
When despair for the world grows in me
and I wake in the night at the least sound
in fear of what my life and my children's lives may be,
I go and lie down where the wood drake
rests in his beauty on the water, and the great heron feeds.
I come into the peace of wild things
who do not tax their lives with forethought
of grief. I come into the presence of still water.
And I feel above me the day-blind stars
waiting with their light. For a time
I rest in the grace of the world, and am free.

Conversation with G last night:
Me: Why can't I remember this?
G: Remember what?
Me: Who was Al Gore's running mate?
G: Al Gore's running mate? Oh, it was Lieberman.
Me: Oh yeah (sigh).
Four years ago today, G and I got married on a Wednesday night in an Italian restaurant with our dearest of friends and family in attendance. I'll never forget when our officiant and friend, Jeff (who's a lawyer not a clergy member) said, "All right everyone, let's get these kids hitched!" And a little over nine months later, we had Maria! Must have been all that Prosecco!
Happy St. Patrick's Day Everyone! And Happy Anniversary to G! Thanks for all that you do and for the endless supply of humor and tomfoolery!
Now I'm off to find this Green Beer I keep hearing about ...
